Vilas Research Professor in Philosophy at University of Wisconsin-Madison, about doing his PhD backwards (dissertation first, coursework second), his move from more traditional philosophy into the philosophy of biology, and the hard problem of why the simplicity of a scientific theory should be relevant to saying what the world is like.
